On Sunday, July 27^th, on a rainy afternoon, people from all ages and walks of life poured into the basement of Travis Park Church and were transported back to the 1980s.

Guests were treated to jams by Jared “DJ Red” May from Two Ten Entertainment on a glow in the dark dance floor, a photo booth sponsored by Katy Stein of Reliance Residential Realty, a friendship bracelet making station, retro video games, sandwiches and pizza, and neon swag.

The Joy Division of Travis Park Church is a ministry whose mission is to spark an ambush of JOY with our neighbors in San Antonio. Although participation has been active, this is the biggest undertaking to date for this ministry. The basement was filled with unbridled joy, epic moves, and quality time with our chosen family.

The next dance party event is scheduled for Sunday, October 26!

“What Jesus Looks Like”

Today a dj dropped beats
and heaven clapped along.
The music loud enough to drown out shame.
Loud enough for joy to hear it’s own name.
Friendship bracelets on a folding table –
Holy communion made of string
and plastic beads.
Fingers smudged with pizza sauce,
video game buttons clicking,
children running,
old men smiling like they remembered being boys.
Today we threw a party on purpose.
No dress code. No tickets.
Just show up.
Just be here.
Just be loved.
We danced with our friends on the streets-
Not “the homeless,”
not “those people,”
but friends.
Family.
God’s kids with stories too big
to fit in a box.
This is what it looks like
when the church remembers
who she is.
When the question isn’t-
“how can we help?”
but, “how can we hang out?”
Just people.
Just presence.
Just the kind of love
that doesn’t need a reason to stay.
This- right here- is what Jesus looks like.
Today we looked like him.
