As many of you know, in February the General Conference of the United Methodist Church adopted new church doctrine, which discriminates against our LGBTQIA siblings and goes against all Travis Park Church stands for. As our congregation continues to discern what our collective response to the global church will be, we need to answer a number of inter-related questions. Some of the more important questions center around whether we should remain part of the UMC in light of this new doctrine, whether we should continue in the Methodist tradition at all, and whether we should continue to worship and serve from our current location in downtown San Antonio.
On August 11, we will begin a brief Sunday School series that will look at these questions – exploring a different question each session. This will be our only class in August. We will also have classes on September 8 and 22. All classes will be in the Labyrinth Room.
We hope these sessions will be informative and that they will help the congregation understand the issues at hand. At our next all-church meeting on Sunday, October 6, we will distribute a survey designed to gauge where the congregation stands on those issues. The survey will not be a binding vote per se, but will help us understand how well-informed we all are on the critical decisions we will need to make in the not-too-distant future.
Please plan to attend each of the three information sessions in the coming months and the all-church meeting on October 6.
