Travis Park Church is a designated shelter for migrants on their journey through San Antonio..
...the number of migrants sheltered at Travis Park Church between March 30 and August 7, 2019...an average of more than 195 a night.
Since March, 2019, Travis Park Church has partnered with The City of San Antonio, San Antonio’s Catholic Charities, The Interfaith Welcome Coalition, and the San Antonio Food Bank to assist thousands of documented migrants on their journey that takes them through San Antonio. As you might imagine, this requires the coordination of many resources such as volunteer support, food, transportation, and pecuniary support to name a few. On this page, you will find a condensed list of the most common areas with contact information to quickly help answer your questions about how you can best offer support.
Ways to Donate
Here is a breakdown of ways you can donate to our migrant ministry.
Children’s clothing and toys go to Goodwill Industries of San Antonio, 406 W. Commerce St., San Antonio, TX 78207. (800) 483-9455. They supply clothing for the Migrant Resource Center.
Clothing donations are routed through Catholic Charities: more info at this link. Clothing donations can be dropped off at Catholic Charities’ Guadalupe Community Center at 1801 W. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd., San Antonio, TX 78207. Please contact (210) 226-6178 before donating your clothing items to ensure staff is available to receive your donation. Most needed are: shirts, pants, dresses, shoes, coats/jackets, blankets and diapers.
LUNCHES FOR BUS STATION
On the fourth Tuesday of each month, volunteers at Travis Park Church pack 50 sack lunches (100 meals) and deliver them to the downtown bus station. Each sack contains: 2 bags of individual serving chips, 2 fruits or fruit cups, 2 baggies of mini carrots, and 2 wrapped desert items. Supplies include paper lunch sacks and zip-lock baggies for sandwiches and snacks. If you would like to donate toward this, contact Kerry Kirtley, email@example.com, to see what supplies are needed.
Ways to Volunteer
Here are the ways you can volunteer to help our migrant ministry.
Want to volunteer to help with this migrant program? The first step you need to take is to complete the online volunteer application form at the Interfaith Welcome Coalition website at this link: https://interfaithwelcomecoalition.org/get-involved. Here, you can also read about the roles available for volunteering. See which one is the best fit for you! We need volunteers at the Bus Shelter, Nighttime shelter, and more. Volunteers under 18 must have an adult accompany them for the length of their shift.
As you might imagine, it is a plus if you speak Spanish, French, Swahili, or Arabic, but it is not necessary. You will still make a huge difference!
We encourage you to attend monthly meetings of The Interfaith Welcome Coalition on the second Thursday of every month at 10 a.m. at San Antonio’s First Presbyterian Church, 404 N Alamo St, San Antonio, TX 78205.
Once a month, volunteers assemble 50 lunches (100 meals) and deliver them to the IWC representatives at the downtown bus station for the migrants. If you would like to help in this manner, please contact Kerry Kirtley, firstname.lastname@example.org.
