Biography

As a self-taught artist, Ruben has been creating for more than 38 years, with his work taking inspiration from his close ties to his local San Antonio community. While he was unhoused, Ruben drew in San Antonio public libraries and parks and found inspiration everywhere. His ingenuity with materials has contributed to his unique mixed-media style that emphasizes the interplay between light and shadow. Ruben specializes in portraits, and his artwork often uses religious iconography to play with themes of humanity and possibility. Today, Ruben’s work is his way of giving back, and his art has been auctioned and donated to support the organizations that sustain his community.
